With the support of a grant from the NSW Wildlife Council’s 2024-2025 Wildlife Rehabilitation Program, Wildlife ARC has obtained a five bank custom-made reptile enclosure. The enclosure features lockable drop-down doors, light fittings, and thermostats, providing a safe and hygienic environment for reptiles needing intensive care, including sick or injured venomous snakes.
The enclosure arrived just in time as reptiles emerged from brumation (the reptile version of hibernation) in search of food and a mate. Unfortunately, this season also brings an increase in incidents like dog and cat attacks, vehicle collisions, and netting entanglements, resulting in many reptiles coming to Wildlife ARC for care.
One of the first to benefit from the new enclosures was a Red-bellied black snake that had sustained an injury after becoming entangled in netting. The enclosure’s size allowed the snake to move freely, while the specialised heating and lighting helped it thermoregulate during recovery. After just over two weeks in care, the snake was healthy enough to be released.
A heartfelt thank you to NWC for enabling us to provide our reptile patients with enclosures that meet their unique needs, ensuring the best chance for recovery and release. Your generosity has made a lasting impact!
